Degree Program: BS in Chemistry, MS in Medicinal Chemistry
Year graduated: BS in 1981, MS in 1984

Why I chose USP

I had participated in a summer research program at USP after 11th grade under Dr. Goldstein. We worked with graduate students for the summer in lab, assisting their research and learning how to conduct different lab tests. I was greatly impressed with the school's facilities, faculty, size, and atmosphere, and decided to apply only to USP for college.

How this degree program prepared me for my career

Much of my work the past several years has been with pharmaceutical brand name and generic companies. My USP background lets me work more closely with the scientists, as an interface with most of the lawyers. Not only do the clients like my USP education, but it really helps me to understand their concerns and perspectives, too.

My career path since graduation

I left USP with a master's degree in medicinal chemistry, and I taught high school physics at The Haverford School for one year afterwards. Then I decided to go to law school, and combine science with law. I went to Cornell Law School, graduated with honors in 1988, and have been practicing patent law ever since, including working for a Judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit for two years.

I work mostly with pharmaceutical, chemical, and biotech products and inventions, in preparing and obtaining patents, defending and prosecuting law suits for patent infringement, negotiating licenses and other transactional documents, and helping clients decide how to avoid infringing patents. Lately, we have been working with generic companies to help determine non-infringing alternatives to popular brand name drugs.

A memorable USP experience

Dr. Solomon was my professor, mentor, friend, and later colleague at USP and then The Haverford School. His manner, attitude, dedication, and teaching will always serve as my greatest inspirations.

My advice for prospective students

Law and science is a powerful combination that is wide open to those who want to pursue it. Many interesting paths are available. Go for it, if you are so inclined!

Other things I want people to know about USP

Take advantage of the rich depth of experiences and research. Find something you are really good at and enjoy it.
